Update - sent 3rd February 2003

Yo dudes, I mean Geeday Bruce,

Well I've been in Brisbo for a week so far it's most bodacious, can't remember why I didn't like it last time I was here, it's probably the difference between trying to find a job or dossing and I am definately doing the later at the moment. It's great. Mab you'd love the Casino here it's bleeding big and full of blackjack roulette tables and Pokies(not racist they are just one armed bandits but that is too much of a mouthful for the average aussie). One evening I think I blew about, ooh erm 1$ (about 30 pence) as they have 2 cent pokies which is almost impossible to lose (or win) i got so bored with it I was just playing to lose, after about an hour I managed - hurrah!

Went to the Crocodile Hunters zoo with some Canadian chick(hey nonny nonny), unfortunately he was off making a documentary somewhere but his zoo is worth a visit.

I'd dearly love to set up a bloggers website but as I can't be arsed I won't, (can Michael not set it up form me?) I'd rather be miles away from these pratting gibbing machines, mucking around in the red red desert or blue blue sea(Jack Keruoac eat yer heart outaroony). Incredibly the rain has caught up with me here in Brsb so I am forced to use this machine, whatever happened to papyrus scrolls? How's the old T-shirt scam getting along? there would be a big demand for them here from all the psycho japanese tourists, perhaps i could get the crocodile hunter to fashion one the next time he's grappling with a 6m 1 tonne saltie(crocodile that is not Japanese Sumo tourist).

Rachel from work is keeping in contact by emailing me(I think she wants me for my opal fortune now) so i know how lovely it is for you lot back in blighty/the fatherland, I could go back to work but I fancy going somewhere new still as Australia is quite cheap I am not going to waste too much time thinking aboot(damn those Canadians eh?) that at the mo.

Keep warm chaps and as Jean Paul Sartre(he must have done lots of backpacking) said Hell is other people.

Yo Lads

Here i am still in the landownunder whats stupot address I haven't sent him a postcard and whats his email address i aint got it on this hotmail address list thingy.

Big Frank has sent me an email and is accusing me of starting all these forest fires, when i know for a fact that he always carries a cigarette lighter and/or matches with him, if that aint a smoking gun then what is?

Am in Sunny Brisbane got fed up of the rainstorms and box jellyfish in the tropics saw heaps of massive crocs tho, bravely I flung myself onto the biggest and got some chick to take pics of me wrestling a croc by its tail cant wait for the photies to be developed, maybe I'll have my own exhibition when I get back or at least serruptitiously(maybe the wrong spelling)sneak a few of my pics into Vaggas exhi - that'd liven them up a bit. Anyhoo, I took a leaf out of your book and decided to take a break from the backpacker lifestyle I haggled with a 4 star hotel right in the heart of brisbaneand have a palatial room with view cable tele and swimming pool all for 20 quid a night, which is about 5 quid a night more than i'd spend in a backpackers still I have hardly slept in a dorm cos getting rooms are pretty cheap - as long as it is 3 and a bit dollars to the pound.

Well am going to doss here for a week or so swimming hiking etc, then am off to see steve Irwins Zoo it's 60 miles away should be good for a lark.

Still haven't found a decent curry place but the chinese and eyetie food here is exceptionally good as are the cappucinos.

Yo Mab,

Well here I am in glorious Alice Springs and guess what Seans Oirish bar serves not only the best beer but actually stunned me by serving a toothsome Irish vegetable curry! So if you are in this part of the world sometime check it out.

Am off up to Darwin now to check out a tropical cyclone the thunderstorms are supposed to be awesome I wanted to drive up there but because of the wet season most of the roads have been washed away. So I have to fly - only 60 quid tho(1500km too). When I get there I want to do some diving then go to kakadu -where they filmed Crocodile Dundee- and tickle a few Saltwater crocs and possibly tweak the nose of terror.

Great pictures of the gammy toe, it reminds me of atypical breakfast out here in the outback, it's a great feeling sleeping outdoors in the middle of nowhere in a swag the night sky is clearer here than probably anywere else on the planet, the milky way is the brightest I have ever seen it. Plus it is well scary to hear dingoes howl in the night just yards away frm you, but my strategy is to make sure a fat person is sleeping between me and the vicious canines. It has worked so far.

I am less stronger but more fitter now as i do ton of walking and swimming and the food here is ok but quite expensive as transporting stuff into the desert costs lots. it is still a lot cheaper than blighty except beer which tastes rubbish and costs the same as in the uk.

I have 2 more months left in oz then i am going to nz but it is not worth working there as the rate of pay is crap and anyhoo I am hoping to get to Hawaii before my money runs out.

Right I am off to the boozer now to hit on crazy german chicks, there dont seem to be any ozzy ones around these parts.

Hi John

I see your having fun and getting into the Ausi way of life

I see you are being an adventurer going walk about - have you met any new friends? Are you fitter and healthier? My cousin Frank is also in Oz - Sydney at the moment - say hello to him if you want to - frankmeaneya1@hotmail.com

Have you met and Crocodiles yet and scared off Steve Ewrin or have you seen the Penis Puppeteers - you could ask for a job with them. I have just read a book about the Ausi camel woman - a good looking bird who travelled in the out back for months on her own with 4 camels she trained herself. She became famous as she was a chick on her own in the outback and surviving.

Keep away from the Roo's

see you

have fun

Michael

Johns Update sent 14 January 2003

Happy new year dudes.

Well here i am in the red centre Alice Springs in fact and boy it's hot! 40 degrees! but in Cooper Pedy it was 52 degrees I just sat and watched the lettuce in my butty just shrink and disappear. Still when you're a dead tough opal miner like me that sort of heat you take on the chin, hey I found 4 opals they are all mine - so I may retire now. Also found fossilised jellyfish Kings Canyon and tons of meteorites in the Simpson (doh!!) desert but had to leave em as they weigh a ton.

So far I've done a ton of hiking went up this place called Wilpena Pound(where they filmed they rock climbing stuff in mission impossible 2) it is much more spectacular than Uluru(well its pretty good) it's like some giant has punched his fist into the ground, amazing! a bloody rock hard climb to see it tho. Had a really good guide/driver for the 10 day trip thru the outback he's part aboriginal so he's just a goldmine of fascinating bushtucker/survival stuff and i can now play the didgeridoo(which is a white peoples name for it the aboriginals call it something else but i can't remmber what it is - the heat is addling my brain cells) spent almost everynight out under the stars in a swag very comfy apart from the fecking flies, mozzies, scorpions-1 was in my boot the cheeky get- and the howling dingoes.

After 2 weeks in Adelaide I was ready to shove off there's no surf and the diving is bobbins, also New years eve was a bit crap it was about 10 degreees and it just rained heavily all night about 2 fireworks went off big deal! and the yacht we were supposed to go sailing/partying in was cancelled due to the poor weather. I am trying to decide whether to go to the east coast or the west coast life is so hard ho ho!

As you may have guessed I am really missing work and the lovely train ride to wonderful york everyday. I highly recommend a walkers headlamp thing for camping as everybody was trying to steal mine in the outback, the only downer with it is that big bugs tend to fly straight into your face still there's no tv out here so it makes for an amusing interactive form of entertainment. This has been the first time i've used a computer for 4 weeks and it has been so good not to look/hear a tv/computer everybody should try it sometime.

Oh well I've bored you for long enough, now it's time to get an ice cold beer cunningly called ICE cos it is almost breakfast time then I shall go off into the wilds fossicking for some gemstones and another fortune, maybe they'll name a new road after me.

See you bozos in a couple of months.

John
